What Happens During A Smog Check Service.
Before
you take your car to a smog check service for a smog check, is there
anything you can do to give it a better chance of passing? The
obvious answer is to ensure your car is running well in the first
place. A well-maintained vehicle, with all its systems operating
correctly, will probably pass the smog inspection.
During
a smog test, a licensed mechanic will attach measuring equipment to
your vehicle tapeline. The smog check consists of three tests
1.
Emissions Inspection
2.
Visual Inspection
3.
Functional Inspection
The
above tests ensure that your emissions equipment is in correct to place,
functioning accordingly, and is doing its job of weeding out
pollutants from your car's exhaust.
The
harmful gases measured during the emission test includes:
1.carbon
monoxide (CO)
2.
carbon dioxide (CO2)
3.
hydrocarbons (HC)
4.
oxygen (O2)
5.
oxides of nitrogen (Nox) etc.
During
the smog test, the measurements are taken are recorded and immediately
available to the state’s agency responsible for monitoring smog and
vehicle emissions. In Fontana, data goes to the Georgia Clean Air
Force (GCAF). In California state, data is transmitted to the Bureau
of Automotive Repair(BAR).
Cities,
states and counties that require smog or emissions tests for the
Department of Motor Vehicle(DMV) vehicle registration determines which the testing method or combination of methods to use.
If
your vehicle fails the smog inspection, you can choose it to have
repaired at a licensed smog check service and repair station and then
have it retested to pass the smog check. Vehicles that have not
passed inspection is not allowed to run on public roads and owners
will be ticketed if they are caught operating those vehicles.
Emission
problems are generally inexpensive and very quick to repair. If you
believe your vehicle would not pass a smog check, it may be best to
go to a facility that can perform the check and make any necessary
repairs and then take re-test so the vehicle passes smog inspection.
